Poems on the Life of Florence Nightingale
Written & Performed by Margaret Eddershaw
Margaret Eddershaw is a prizewinning poet and very experienced actor, whose professional roles have ranged from Shakespeare to Pinter. She has also performed three of her own one-woman plays at Edinburgh Festival and in London theatres. Darlings, Angels and Fallen Women, (a celebration of the bi-centenary of Dickens’ birth in 2012), is a suite of performance poems in the voices of his mother, wife, daughter, sister-in-law, mistress (and others). This was performed in London this year.
In Notes for a Nightingale (marking the centenary of Nightingale’s death in 2010), the poems give voice to her experiences, the views of her family, friends, politicians, Queen Victoria and soldiers of the Crimean War. This suite appeared in Manchester (2010) and in London (2011). In each suite, the poet-performer uses a few key props to create a series of characters in a thoughtful, witty and moving performance, lasting 55mins.
